AVS Technologies Sp. z o.o. received funding for the implementation of the project entitled “Development of an innovative Easy JectS&Needle system for automatic vaccination of cows”. The project is implemented under a funding agreement concluded with the Polish Agency for Enterprise Development.

Project description

The subject of the project is the development of an innovative system for automatic intramuscular or subcutaneous vaccination of large herds of dairy or beef cows. The new solution will consist of a hardware part and innovative software using, among others, proprietary image analysis algorithms. The essence of the system is to develop a multifunctional vaccination module allowing for highly precise and effective vaccination of animals while maintaining the possibility of their free movement during the procedure.

The analyses carried out have shown that the planned system is characterised by innovation at an international level. Because the system has the potential to create a completely new market segment in the area of equipment for breeding farms, it should be considered a breakthrough solution in its field.

Expected outcomes

  • Fully automatic intramuscular or subcutaneous vaccination of beef or dairy cows of various sizes.
  • The highest level of animal welfare and reduced stress during the procedure.
  • Increased precision of vaccinations and fewer incorrectly administered vaccinations compared to known technologies.
  • Lower vaccination costs — through more precise dose selection and the ability to reuse needles thanks to solutions that keep them fully clean.

Potential recipients

The system will be dedicated to farmers who breed both dairy and beef cows. Thanks to its modular design, it can be used stationarily in milking parlours or as a mobile unit — a specially designed cage will be created for cows herded from the pasture.

Planned work

Task 1 — Carrier mechanism

Development of a mechanism structure that will carry the vaccination module. The mechanism will move in 6 directions simultaneously with each movement of the cow’s neck during vaccination, preventing the needle from bending or breaking. 6-DOF technology will be developed using computer vision to ensure high precision in locating a predefined point on the cow’s neck.

Task 2 — Vaccination module

Development of the vaccination module. Its key elements are the vaccination mechanism and the animal-welfare mechanism. The solutions will cooperate with the mobile mechanism from Task 1; their role is to perform the vaccination.

Task 3 — System integration & prototypes

Development work for the Easy JectS&Needle system: additional functional variants (mobile versions for work outside the barn), a superior control system, a central database, and data acquisition/processing for full functionality, plus end-user control and monitoring software. In the second phase, full integration of the Task 1 and Task 2 models, and prototypes of three system versions — tested functionally in simulated and then real conditions, including with end users.
